The crew consisted of four people: a pilot, 2 tactical officers, an electronic equipment operator. Intended to replace the Grumman S-2 Tracker, the S-3A made its first flight on January 21, 1972. Successful trials initiated the production of 179 Vikings, the first of which entered service in June 1974. The S-3 Viking is equipped with an excellent array of sensors anti-submarine warfare: AN \/ ASQ-81 - tail-mounted magnetic anomaly detector, AN \/ APS-116 sea surface scanning radar and 60 acoustic hydrolocation buoys. The S-3B version could additionally carry two AGM-84 Harpoon anti-ship missiles.
