Construction commenced in 1934 and officially launched in 1936. She entered service in 1938.\u003co:p\u003e\u003c\/o:p\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003eUSS Enterprise narrowly escaped the December 7, 1941 Japanese unannounced attack of\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cst1:place w:st=\"on\"\u003ePearl Harbor\u003c\/st1:place\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003edue to stormy weather. Without any further delay, USS Enterprise was immediately tasked with combat duty against the Japanese.  The “Big E” provided cover for the Doolittle Raid on main land\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cst1:country-region w:st=\"on\"\u003eJapan\u003c\/st1:country-region\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eand took part in the Battle of Midway, Battle of Philippines, Leyte Gulf and provided air support during  Guadalcanal campaign, Gilbert Islands,\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cst1:country-region w:st=\"on\"\u003eMarshall Islands\u003c\/st1:country-region\u003e,\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cst1:country-region w:st=\"on\"\u003ePalau\u003c\/st1:country-region\u003e,\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cst1:place w:st=\"on\"\u003eIwo Jima\u003c\/st1:place\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eand Ryukyu. For a long period of time, the “Big E” took on\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cst1:country-region w:st=\"on\"\u003e\u003cst1:place w:st=\"on\"\u003eJapan\u003c\/st1:place\u003e\u003c\/st1:country-region\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003euntil more aircraft carriers entered service.\u003co:p\u003e\u003c\/o:p\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003eAfter WWII, the “Big E” took part in “Operation Magic Carpet” and brought back\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cst1:country-region w:st=\"on\"\u003eU.S.\u003c\/st1:country-region\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003etroops back to\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cst1:country-region w:st=\"on\"\u003e\u003cst1:place w:st=\"on\"\u003eUSA\u003c\/st1:place\u003e\u003c\/st1:country-region\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eand was decommissioned in 1947.
