In late December 1940, the U.S. Navy ordered all carrier-based aircraft to be painted entirely in Light Grey. Subsequently, in August 1941, the upper surfaces of aircraft belonging to the Pacific Fleet’s Battle Force were painted in Blue- Grey, while the lower areas would retain the previous Light Grey colour. Over the following months, gradually more aircraft were painted in this scheme. By February 1942, it was formally ordered that all U.S. Navy aircraft, both carrier-based and land-based, were to be painted in the Blue-Grey and Light Grey scheme. This initial camouflage scheme remained in use until January 1943, when a new tricolour camouflage scheme was introduced for carrier-based aircraft.
