Heavily armed with four 20mm Mauser cannons and with two 7.92mm machine guns installed in the front of the aircraft, it also featured two remotely controlled MG 131 machine guns housed in side \"barbettes\" on the fuselage. The initial versions for tactical support and bombing missions could carry an offensive payload of over 500 kg in the internal bomb bay or underwing pylons. Distribution to Luftwaffe Squadrons was implemented from mid-1943.
