The vessel was made of oak wood and had a mixed steam and sail drive. It also had no propeller, but two large paddle wheels on the sides. From the beginning, it was created for cruises on the Bristol-New York line - at the same time, the SS Great Western was one of the first paddle steamers to cross the Atlantic. The unit was originally owned by the Great Western Stemship Company, and in 1847 was acquired by the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company. It is worth adding that in the period 1855-1856 it was used to transport troops during the Crimean War.
