The flight of the prototype took place on May 15, 1943, but due to engine faults, serial production started in 1944, designated as C6N1. Due to the very good performance of the machine, it was quickly decided to create a hunting version designated as C6N1-S. The power unit of both versions was an 18-cylinder Nakajima NK9B Homare 21 engine with a power of 1990 HP. Machines were used until the end of the war. The fighter version was designed to fight against B-29 bombers. About 460 C6Ns were built.
