“Prost!”, Between Battles on Bergepanther
WWII German Tankmen with Bergepanther

The harsh living conditions during the fighting and the constant nervous tension and stress experienced by most Wehrmacht soldiers necessitated some kind of mental relief. One of these ways was to drink alcohol. In his memoirs, former Wehrmacht soldier Guy Sayer noted: “At the front, there are as many vodka, schnapps, and liqueurs as there are machine guns. It’s easier to make a hero out of anyone.” Alcohol could also reduce the pain of the wounded. The main alcoholic drink in the Wehrmacht was schnapps, and German soldiers, especially tankers, could also be issued liqueurs. Officers often had French trophy cognacs or wines, which were captured in such large quantities that they were consumed even when surrounded, as was the case, for example, near Stalingrad in the winter of 1943. However, it was very often a bad omen to distribute alcohol to troops, as it often happened before major battles and portended heavy casualties at the front.

ICM 1/35 Bergepanther Prost between battles.

Quite an unusual subject, had it on my wish list for a while before deciding to build it. Now first of al there are two distinct aspects to the kit, first a basic Panther kit with running gear and track links, no turret or interior. Secondly the recovery gear and hoists and finally the figures. The Panther had some flash and fit issues, not too serious but the piece with the hatch openings required some serious sanding before it would fit. This made me wonder if the top deck was from a different kit as the hatch pins would not fit in the holes of the hatch plate.
The instructions are a bit sketchy , they would show a pointer to a single part, ie lifting hook, of a set of 4, the other 3 are shown in place, but some may be obscured by other parts, thus making orientation hard to detect.
The instructions show all the sprue’s with the part numbers, this is vital as there are no part numbers the sprue’s except sprue D, the figures, which come with a separate instruction sheet. Interestingly, sprue A, and B, have tags, but no numbers on them, which makes me wonder if these are from different original kits.
The kit goes together with minimum drama, recovery gear detail is excellent, the figures are good, even though arms may be two piece, the fit is excellent. Take note that on some figures the arms end up close to body, making painting a problem, so paint before fitting the arms.
The tracks build is straight forward, although tedious. All in all the end result is good with a very unique subject, although there are a couple of niggles, they would not put me off from buying the kit.
